One rule governs license verification: check on the register kept by the board that issued it. This is that list of registers, with the response each one gave when we requested it on 2026-10-18.
Each row links to the board’s own register. Nothing else is authoritative — a directory listing, a badge on a website and a screenshot all go stale the day a license lapses.

§ 1What this list is
20 state boards whose search pages we requested directly. It is deliberately not fifty rows: a table of URLs nobody has opened is a table that quietly rots, and it is exactly the kind of page this site exists to be an alternative to.
§ 2What the status column means

A 403 is not a broken link. State portals commonly refuse automated requests, and we record that rather than pretending the check succeeded.
§ 3Reading what you find
Four fields decide whether a license is useful to you: status, classification, bond and expiry. Match the entity name as well as the number — a live number belonging to a different legal entity is the oldest trick in the trade. § 4If your state is not here
Two possibilities. Either the state licenses generals and we have not yet checked its register — in which case the board’s own site is the place to go — or the state does not license general contractors at all, and verification moves to city registration, the certificate of insurance, and the state’s trade licenses. Texas is the clearest example of the second case.
