Contractor licence cost calculator
The board’s fee is the smallest line. This adds the four costs people forget — exam prep, fingerprints, the bond premium and the first year of liability cover — so the number you budget against is the number you will actually spend.
California is pre-filled from CSLB’s own fee schedule. For any other state the fee fields start at zero — put your board’s published figures in rather than a number from a blog.
First-year cost

Board fees for California are read from CSLB's published schedule. Exam prep, bond premium and insurance are your own inputs and vary widely — the bond premium in particular is a credit decision, not a price list. Renewal in later years replaces the application and initial fee with a single renewal fee.

§ 1What this estimates
The cash you will part with in year one to hold a licence. California’s board fees are filled from CSLB’s own published schedule; every other state starts blank, because a fee we have not read from the board is a fee we will not print.
§ 2How to use it
- § 1Pick California to see a worked total, or “another state” and enter your board’s figures.
- § 2Set the bond amount your board requires and your credit tier — this is the line with the widest spread.
- § 3Put a real general liability figure in. Our GL calculator gives you the band.
§ 3Worked example
A California sole owner, good credit, modest exam prep. The board takes $699 of it — which is genuinely the small part once the bond and the first year of liability cover are in.
| Line | Source | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Application | CSLB fee schedule | $450 |
| Initial licence (sole owner) | CSLB fee schedule | $200 |
| Fingerprints — DOJ | CSLB fee schedule | $32 |
| Fingerprints — FBI | CSLB fee schedule | $17 |
| Live Scan rolling fee | set by the operator | varies |
| Exam and prep | your input | varies |
| Bond premium | your credit tier | varies |
| General liability, year one | your input | varies |
| Board fees only | read 2026-09-04 | $699 |
§ 4Later years
From year two the application and initial licence fees disappear and a single renewal fee replaces them — $450 for an active California sole owner. The bond premium and the insurance recur. Let the licence lapse and reactivation costs $450, which is the most avoidable line on this page.
