Renewing a contractor licence

Renewal is a date, a fee and — in a growing number of states — a continuing-education requirement. The date is the part that matters, because in a board state an expired licence is not a lesser licence. It is no licence, and the work you do while it is expired is unlicensed work with everything that follows.

Most boards offer an inactive status: the licence stays alive, the number stays yours, and you may not contract. It exists for a genuine pause — an illness, a year working for somebody else, a wind-down that might reverse — and it is cheaper than an active renewal.

Inactive is not free of obligations. You still renew on time, and coming back to active is a reactivation with its own fee — $450 for a California sole owner. Going inactive for one cycle and back costs more than staying active for two.

Three costs, in ascending order of pain. The fee difference is the smallest: in California a lapse turns a $450 renewal into a $450 reactivation, a difference of $0.

The second is the bond. Your $25,000 bond has to be continuous; a gap between the old bond ending and the new one starting is a gap the board can see, and it is a separate problem from the licence itself.

The third is the work. Anything you contracted while expired sits in the unlicensed category, which reaches your right to be paid — see working unlicensed. That is the cost that is not measured in fees.

More states attach continuing education to renewal every year, and the requirement is usually a small number of hours across named topics — often including a business or law module and, in the trades, a code-update module.

Two rules save trouble: take the hours from a provider your board approves by name, and keep the certificate. Boards audit, the audit lands after the renewal, and the provider you used two years ago may not still be there to reissue it.
